Weight Loss Challenge Week 13--After Thanksgiving!

It is now week 13 of the weight loss challenge!

This past week was Thanksgiving week, and it was a definite challenge to stay pretty close to on track as possible.

The food was awesome!  We partook in flan, pan de maiz, black beans and rice, garbanzos (made very flavorful), and Cuban candies, as well as all kinds of tropical fruits you just don't find in southern Kansas.  Then, we feasted on the homemade traditional Thanksgiving dinner, with turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, green beans with bacon, green bean casserole, corn casserole, made from scratch apple pie and pumpkin pie, deer roast, gravy, you name it.

I tried hard, and kept it to one plate with a small serving of most of the goods.  Then dessert was a small piece of flan (a sniff is about 100 calories, so a small piece is more than sufficient) and a small piece of apple pie.  The breakfast and supper was for me a banana for each, in order to help keep the calories down to be able to enjoy the feasting meal.

Throughout the week there were other opportunities to fall off track.  I worked at staying on the wagon.  I survived a trip to Golden Corral too--the first buffet I've been to in a long long while.  I made it through a lettuce salad with tuna salad on top and pears on the side, then half of a chicken breast piece of fried chicken and half of a serving of pasta and meaty sauce.  It was awesome!  This was an impromptu date night after hubby and I dropped the kids off for a visit with their biological mom (my son was with his biological dad) and hadn't left the city yet to head back to our little town.  It was worth the calorie rush to enjoy tuna salad--it is my favorite food, outranking pizza and ice cream.  I don't make it often since I can plow through a huge bowl of it in a day or two and not bat an eye.  Hubby enjoyed what I couldn't finish, so it didn't go to waste.  I don't like wasting, even if it's at a buffet, it just doesn't seem right.

I kept up with my goals on exercise, with a goal of at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week.  Most days I really try to go above that.  I averaged at least 2 miles a day, often going to 3, and once up to 5.  This is via the Leslie Sansone walk at home dvd's that add a lot more to the walking--it's a good cardio workout!  This week I picked up the "Radio Remixes" dvd Leslie has out, and have enjoyed walking quite fast to "I Like To Move It", among other songs.  I've enjoyed the music, as at least 2 of the songs are featured on kid movies we have--the Madagascar movie series--King Julien dances to "I Like To Move It" in each of the movies.  The other I really like is also the intro song to Cats and Dogs 2 featuring Kitty Galore.  So in walking to those songs, I get the mental image of King Julien and the lemurs dancing, and then the cats and dogs in Kitty Galore movie.

It's fun to walk and dance to a fast beat and end up laughing at yourself at the same time!  LOL  It  makes exercising all the more enjoyable!

This past week I also had an amazing blessing that I have to share.  You see, my wardrobe has become much too big due to all the weight I've shed so far.  I'd thinned out quite a bit of the clothing.  Money has been very tight, our budget doesn't usually allow for me to buy new clothing, let alone enough to make up for what I had to remove from the closet.  Then, God moved immensely, and using a wonderful lady (who is also our insurance agent and a member of our church), He provided a whole new wardrobe!  She contacted me about some clothes she had and asked if I was interested, if not she would take them to the local thrift shop.  I gladly accepted, figuring they were for the kids.  I had no idea they were adult plus sizes.  She stopped by with 3 large, very stuffed trashbags full of nice women's clothing!  As I sorted them, I cried--they were nearly all in the sizes I am currently in, and a few pieces in the next size down--my next goal!  I bawled for at least a half hour, and still get teary eyed--God provided a new wardrobe in the sizes I am at right now, with plenty of sweaters and warm clothing that are needed for winter months.  And get this--I'd not told a soul that I wanted to make myself a flannel nightgown to wear during the cold months.  A red plaid flannel nightgown was in the bag, in my size!  Isn't is awesome how God works???  I'm able to get into a non-stretchy 22/24 pants now, according to what was in the bags!  The knees really need work on my part, but I can get a 22/24 over my rear end and wear them with no problems, and very close to getting a 22 by itself fastened and zipped.  Last month I was painting on size 26 stretch jeans in the fitting room.  The tag on the largest skirts I have from Woman Within are 34/36 and need darts and such to keep from falling off my hips.  So in 3 months time I've went from a 34/36 bottom to a 22/24, and God provided the clothing to keep up!

Isn't God good???

Doesn't the Bible tell us not to worry about our clothing and food, that God takes care of all our needs?

I can't give up!  This has been the biggest encouragement, the big boost to keep on going, now that my closet is overflowing with much smaller clothing than what I started out in.  During the holidays I'm determined not to over do it and let go, not with the blessings God bestowed!!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi everyone!  I hope all of you who celebrate Thanksgiving are having a great one!

Here, we are enjoying a week with family that came to visit!  Hubby's uncles, aunt, and cousins came from Florida and are spending the week, and we are considering kidnapping and other means to keep them here.  (grins)  They are all Cuban, and I love them to pieces!

Hubby's aunt made from scratch some flan.  We haven't jumped into it yet, but it smells heavenly.  She also made some pan de mais and black beans and rice.  She is an awesome cook, and I've found some new favorite dishes!  I've been missing out all these years!

The family also brought with them fruits and avacados and things that you just don't get in Kansas.  Sure, we have the Haas ones, the little bitty wrinkled things, but they are nothing compared to the huge huge ones that the family brought!  They are like big green footballs!  And the fruits, so rich and addicting and absolutely not found in rural Kansas....

So far I've made the traditional Thanksgiving items, the green bean casserole, the corn casserole, candied sweet potatoes using fresh sweet potatoes from the garden, we have a turkey to bake in the morning, a deer roast has already been cooked and put away.  Mashed potatoes are done, there's gravy and stuffing to make too. Our pies are scratch ones, a cherry from fresh cherries I canned in the summer, apple, and pumpkin, and maybe something else if I get the notion.  There's also some Cuban treats the family brought, that look so sweet and delicious, to go along with the homemade flan and pan de mais.  Anyone who starves tomorrow with us does it on their own! 

Our Thanksgiving service on Tuesday was about how being thankful for everything is not a suggestion but a command.  "In ALL things give thanks".  That is a lesson we all need to take to heart, we all tend to forget or find reason not to give thanks.  It's hard to be thankful in the midst of hard trials....but as we were shown Tuesday, the bible does tell us to be thankful in all things...not just the good things or the comfortable things.  This is something I have to work on, as it's much easier to beg to be released from a trial than to give thanks for it.  Ouch!

Challenge wise, I've been sticking with plans as much as possible.  I keep track of calories--not strictly but pretty close--with "My Fitness Pal" program.  I programmed in 30 minutes of exercise 5x a week, and so far have exceeded that.  Even with the upcoming feasting, I've been working to keep under control as much as I can in order to have a "day off" for Thanksgiving, to enjoy the high carb food, the sweet, the savory, without guilt. My exercise has been the Leslie Sansone dvd's, as it is cold outside and I'm a wimp about exercising in the cold.  I use the 5 Mega Miles one for now, which uses a stretch band for 2 of the miles, and the rest are intervals of high impact and anywhere from 12 to 15 minute miles.  The kids have joined me in these while they are on vacation, and it's a giggle fest when they're doing these!

Weight Loss Challenge--Week 12--52 Pounds Down!

It's heading into the 12th week of my challenge!  Wow, it feels like it just started!

It's been a productive week to say the least!  This week has been full of lots of exercise, and a weigh in.  I last weighed in on November 10th, and had lost that pound I'd gained over the Halloween candy rush.  I weighed in again on this last Thursday, the 20th, and had lost 6 more pounds!


52 pounds down since September 4, 2014.

Isn't God amazing?????   I'm so thankful He's blessed me with the strength I've needed to take this off!!

This week's exercise has been much better as well!

I missed Sunday and Thursday, but did 2 miles Monday, 3 miles Tuesday and Wednesday, 3 1/2 miles Friday, and 5 miles Saturday.  These are the power walking, stretch band and small weights using miles with the Leslie Sansone dvd's.  These are nothing to sneeze at!  When I started this adventure in September, I couldn't handle 2 blocks, now I'm up to 5 miles of power walking. 

Can I get an Amen here??

This adventure has sure shown me what the Lord can do, if you put trust in Him.  It has to be Him, because I sure don't have the strength on my own to keep up what I'm doing in order to drop off 52 pounds in under 3 months.

With the Thanksgiving holiday week rolling in, it will be a temptation week.  I already see it coming, and am planning extra exercise, and plenty of healthy options to hopefully negate the sweets we enjoy.  Also, the family that snapped the original picture that helped start this adventure is returning!  We're excited!  I expect there will be more photos, and can't wait to share one or two.   In the meantime, there's lots of cooking to do to make this get together a memorable feast.  I get to meet my husband's aunt for the first time, and see his sweet uncles and cousins after they get here from Florida.

Count Your Blessings

It's nearing Thanksgiving, and every one has "giving thanks" on their lips.

This shouldn't be just a once a year occasion.  We are supposed to be thankful for everything the Lord does or gives!

A hymn we sing in church is "Count Your Blessing".  It is a stirring one to say the least, if you stop and read the lyrics!

A story I heard on Joni and Friends (radio show) had to do with a leper, who had no nose, her fingers had fallen away, and her body ravaged by the disease.  While at a service and hearing preaching, she asked to hear the song "Count Your Blessing".

If a woman with such a disease can be thankful in the midst of pain and isolation.....we have no reason not to be!

We have so much, we have a beating heart, air in our lungs, blood flowing, a home, food, family of some sort (whether blood or otherwise), and most of all--the Lord.

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Weight Loss Challenge Week 11--Back to Business!

It's been an awesome week!  It's past the candy craze of Halloween and the left over candy bags, and it's time to move on to the turkey and veggies of Thanksgiving.

This week I've taken off that 1 pound I gained, and by the feel and looks of my body, probably taken off more.  My eating is back on track, and even started using the My Fitness Pal program online to keep track of food intake and exercise.  If you're trying to lose weight/size, this is a good program to plug into, either on computer or phone!  From what I'm seeing, I am averaging about 1500 to 1600 calories, and on a splurge day about 2000.  On a plan for allowing 2 pounds a week loss, I'm allowed up to 2500.  Then, throw in exercise!

Exercise this week has been ramped up a lot!  In my last entry for the weekly challenge, I had just started walking 2 miles, and it was kind of a challenge, but it was a slower pace than in the Leslie Sansone videos.  My natural pace isn't hoofing it at 12 or 15 minute miles.  This week, I walked Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, minimum of 2 miles each, with a 3 mile walk Friday, via the dvd's Leslie has out.  I have for my own the 5 Mega Miles dvd, and I borrowed a 3 mile dvd from the library, so there's plenty of walking available.  The weather outside went to the freezer, so inside has been the best option, and to tell you the truth, it's been nice.  Our home stays a bit chilly (we choose to keep the heater lower and use space heaters in rooms we use most during the day and wear layers of clothing to keep warm), so doing a 2 or more mile walk warms you up, you don't sweat quite as much, and you feel nice and warm for a while afterward.  I admit, I look funny powerwalking in the living room, doing side steps, kickbacks, front kicks, and stretch band work, but in looking like a fool it is changing my body for the good!

 When I started this adventure on September 4, I couldn't walk 2 blocks without being ready to fall over right there, with huffing and puffing and sweating and pain.  Now, I can do 3 miles and do it in 45 minutes. 

This week I've not had to use pain medicine much at all.  I'm talking naproxen and tylenol (I don't use prescriptions for that).  My knees had been giving so much pain, I had to take many many of them daily.  Since starting the 2 miles (or more) near daily, the legs are strengthening and fat is coming off, and the knees don't hurt nearly as much.  With the cold setting in, they've been stiff from arthritis, but that's not painful.  It's more like trying to move a nearly frozen'll move, just much more slowly.  I haven't had any neuropathy pain in over a month (feet).  For a long while I had chest pains that made me think of heart attack--it really stopped me in my tracks!  I haven't had those in almost 2 months, not even a glimmer of any chest pain.  My breathing is better, I don't huff and puff and feel strangulated just sitting upright, and can sing out on the hymns at church without being out of breath. 

And I look forward to the scale and to exercise!

I'm so amazed at how much has changed in 2 months.  God has been so good to me, I so don't deserve how much He's helped along the way.  It's on His strength that I keep going, especially on the days I don't want to get out of bed and turn on heaters and make the coffee and face the day bleary eyed.  He's let me see progress i never dreamed of in a short amount of time, and given me the drive to keep after it, to say no when need be (most of the time it works), and to keep on keeping on.  This is His temple, and I've neglected and abused it for many years.  He could have just said "sorry, you had your time", but He is gracious and merciful, giving me another chance.  He gives us ALL another chance, if we'll take it.

This week areas of the body started peeking out from under the fat.  Wrist bones are showing an outline.  Cheekbones.  You can actually feel some ribs.  Foot bones.  Knees are starting to emerge from layers of fat.  Pelvic bones are starting to outline, despite having plenty of fat left to remove.  Shoulders became prominent and squared.  Back muscles are showing definition. 

I've found a frugal use for clothing that is too big.  I know most folks who lose a lot of size/weight want to ditch the wardrobe fast.  I do too.  But, with winter coming on early, and a limited budget, I've found it easier to keep the clothing and use smaller clothing to layer under the larger clothing--using the smaller underneath that fit and placing the larger over top, you don't feel constricted, yet have the layers of warmth.  Who cares if folks see the body outline and shape when it's freezing outside and you have things to do!  I have pulled out my solid cotton fabric pieces that are too big in order to remake them into something else, and kept the knits and fleeces that are larger in order to do the layering.  You have to do what you have to do for your own budget and warmth needs, right?

I hope you all have had a great week!  If it hasn't been so great, take a look back at what went wrong, what you can do about it, and take control of that.  It doesn't have to define your week to come.  So what if you ate something you regret.  So what if you didn't exercise all you wanted to.  God gave us a new day, use it the best you can to glorify Him, with how you treat your body and in turn using that temple for His use!  Don't beat yourself up over setbacks.  The devil doesn't want you going forward and using what God gave you for His use.  The devil would rather you sit down and beat yourself up over the cookies, the ice cream, the lack of exercise. 

As Leslie Sansone says in many of her miles....the best time to walk is when you're doing it.  Any time! 

Many times in the past weeks I've been asked what I'm doing to lose as much size and weight as I have.  It seems like folks are looking for a magic trick to wave a wand and it all happen in an instant.  It doesn't work that way.  In my world, it was getting diabetes under control using medicines.  That was the first step, as the high blood glucose just sent everything to fat storage.  Dealing with the diabetes got the thing started, and using the meds to advantage (the first month of using Victoza was horrible with the side effects of vomiting, but those days are gone).  I still use Victoza shots, and it helps keep things regulated to where I don't want to eat makes my body use what it has to keep things under control, or else I really seek out carbs and feel like a ravenous lion.  Once the side effects quit, I had to work at it myself.  I had to deal with portion control, selecting nutritionally good foods, and preparing things that aren't fried and fattening.  I had to exercise.  It became work.  It's still the same premise--eat less than you use, limit fats and sugars, and exercise.  It's not magic, no pills or potions do the trick. 

It. is. work.

But rewarding work.

And if you're needing to lose size and weight, you CAN do it!  It may seem daunting.  It may seem like you want to give up early on, with cravings and wants and so on.  Just keep going!  Marathons are built on length, not on short sprints.  For many of us, losing size and weight is a marathon that goes on for years.  Even in the Bible, Paul talks about how our spiritual race is a marathon, not a sprint...  You don't grow into a mature Christian overnight, nor will you get your body into where it needs to be overnight! 

Keep up the good work, and keep on keeping on!!  I'm praying for you!

The Way You Look At Yourself

How do you see yourself when you look in the mirror?  Do you see a distorted view, like you'd see in a house of mirrors?

Do you see yourself much larger than you are?

Much smaller?

Something that I've found in this journey I started 2 months ago, is that the way I see myself in the mirror isn't the way I truly look.  I see myself as the 400 pound woman I was.  The one in the first picture I ever shared of myself.  I see the size 32/34 in the mirror, not the 22/24.  Even with clothing that is too big, a measuring tape going farther in, I don't "see" it when I look at myself. 

It's a distorted view.  It is also known as "phantom fat".  It is a struggle with body image that comes around when you've been fat/obese/overweight/fluffy (whatever you want to call it) a long while.  In my case, most of my life.  It's in the same realm as when someone loses a limb the feeling that it's still there.  It's not the same, but in the ballpark.  You lose a good portion of body fat, you still see and feel it there.

In an article from From Fat To Fit Girl, this is explained a bit better.  The article also offers ideas to help get your perception to match your body (there's quite a few in the article, here's a few:)

  1. Put a photo of yourself on the fridge or another visible place where you think you look better than perfect
  2. Get yourself a pair of skinny jeans or colored pants that make you keep thinking “Girl, you are small!”
  3. Take pictures now & compare them to old pictures
  4. Ask a friend or a significant other you absolutely trust what they think about your looks after the weight loss
  5. Look yourself in the mirror while you work out and compare the body you see with other bodies in the gym
  6. Go window shopping! Pick something out that you would never have dared to wear before and try it on just for the fun of it!
  7. Try on your old over-sized clothes! This way you will get a clear perspective of your progress and your current body size.

 I particularly like number 7, as I haven't bought any new clothes yet.  This one is easy!  I've also done number 6, which was rewarding. :)  Number 3 is one I do here on the blog and embarrass myself regularly showing my hefty self to you all.

I mentioned this to hubby, as I have to ask him if I really do look smaller at all, since I can't see it.  After looking at me like my head is spinning in circles and I grew a horn or something, he says he didn't understand that.  Later on, he mentioned that after thinking about it, he has heard of that concept--in folks with anorexia nervosa.

I've never been accused of anorexia.  But, I get what hubby was saying about that--many or most with anorexia see themselves in a very distorted light, seeing fat where there isn't any, and seeing themselves much much much larger than they really are.  I get that.

Good Morning!

Good morning from Kansas!  It's a chilly morning, with light frost on the grass and a little bite in the wind.  But, since it's November, that's to be expected.

This morning, sausage and gravy sits on the stove, warm and ready for the family to come downstairs.  Scrambled eggs sit on the burner waiting for each member to choose what they want on them (cheese, salsa, nothing, etc).  The coffee pot is full of dark roast and espresso blend coffee, and the tea pot is still hot from it's first use of the day making cranberry vanilla herbal tea.

It is Sunday.  The pace isn't as fast, but still a bit to do before going to church.  Should middle child (with autism, mental retardation, and bi polar disorder) do another refusal to go , I will stay home with him.  If we all get to go, I'm looking forward to the bible study during Sunday School, and the sermon series through Genesis in the main service. 

It's a new week, and a new opportunity to focus on what is important in our world.  For me, it's getting eating and exercise back on track.  No more candy and junk.  More walking, more hand weights, more resistance band.  For the family, it is looking forward to half days at school, a whole day off for one child, and an upcoming weekend visiting noncustodials parents.  We are also preparing bit by bit for Thanksgiving week, with house preparations, cleaning, and so on.

Weight Loss Challenge Week 10

It's nearing mid November now, and the season is definitely in high gear!  The leaves have turned pretty colors and fallen to the ground.  The majority of the flowers and tender plants have died off in the chill.  Our first snow is scheduled next weekend!

As for me, it wasn't the best of weeks, but it could have been much worse.  Evidently I partook a bit too much with the family with the snacks.  I gained 1 pound as of my weigh in today (Saturday).  But, it could have been much worse, and am thankful it was only 1 pound.

Now it's time to get back to serious work and leave the candy days behind.

I have noticed more endurance, which is awesome! I'm able to do a 2 mile walk (charted via google maps) around town in 45 minutes.  Granted Leslie Sansone's dvd walks are 15 minute miles, it isn't like that for me in the real world.  Plus there's uneven streets, gradual hills, traffic, and so on.  With this last walk, I didn't break a sweat and was able to stay conversational with breathing, so wasn't out of breath.  Afterward, I didn't need anything for pain, nor through the night or the next day.  This is a huge accomplishment!  Two months ago, I was huffing and puffing after 2 blocks.  Two miles were not an option.

Despite the gain, I'm feeling more joints emerging, more outline of a frame, and more cottage cheese.  While most folks don't like cottage cheese, I do.  My make up was mostly solid fat all the way around, lots of large lumps rather than the "cottage cheese".  As fat has left, the solid look has melted into a more cottage cheese look.  I can handle that, especially knowing that there was much more, and will be much less.  It has been nice finding outlines of muscles, of prominent bone structures that were once totally hidden under layers of fat.  It's been awesome finding longer toes rather than flesh colored peas for toes.  It's been great finding ankles instead of the never ending calf.  Finger joints and workings in the hands have come to the surface, and while still buried a little, the show the large joints that come from a German heritage.  I'm seriously built like a tank.  Knees are starting to emerge from the flab surrounding it.  Shoulders are squaring off and even showing where muscle meets bone and the v notches.  And, a waist is emerging.

This past week I've been reading "Wheat Belly".  It's been an interesting read, about the harm wheat does to the body.  I'm doing trial and error, testing some of the ideas to see where or if I fall in them.  I do notice differences if I eat store bought breads and pastas vs homemade, but not sure if that's preservatives or wheat.  I've cut almost all bread, pastas, crackers, and so on out, so it shouldn't be hard to reintroduce and see what the results are.  I am not one to go all out on a radical tangent--I don't jump on the no-GMO bandwagon, nor the organic wagon, or the other things that are out there.  I more or less stick to what's affordable for my family on a very limited budget. 

As for the book, I would recommend at least reading it and see what you think.  As with all reading, take what works, put to the side what doesn't.  There's some good ideas in it, and some that may not be workable in our limited budget and the abundance of products with wheat.  But, I can work our breads from wheat to rye without batting an eye.  Pizza crust is not biggie, if I make it myself--again, rye works.  Once we get into things that aren't made from scratch, it isn't quite so easy....wheat is in most everything at some place, just like corn is just about everything.

The goal for the upcoming week is more intentional exercise.  I got sidetracked very easily the past couple of weeks, and didn't get much in.  It showed.  Yes, housekeeping is exercise, but not enough to burn off the amount I'm working on.

Weight Loss Challenge--Week 9

What an awesome week!

I had opportunity this week to stop in the clinic I use for medical needs, and hopped on their scale.  It was nice!


46 pounds gone since September 4, 2014!

I was expecting maybe 2 or 3 since my last weigh in.  I really didn't expect much, as I've been eating more than in the first month.  I didn't expect to drop 10 or so in 2 weeks when I really thought I'd hit a plateau.

I'm thrilled naturally!

I still have that blue skirt--it was about calf length in that picture, now it's ankle length.  It's a homemade one with easily adjustable elastic. :)

As the weeks go by I'm settling into a pattern I can sustain.  With God's help, I'm overcoming the big things that helped me get to the 400 pounds I started with....emotional eating, seeking comfort in a bag of chips instead of the Lord, wanting a sugar high instead of a Holy Spirit high, and so on.  Sometimes my prayers are nothing more than a weak "help!"  Other times it's easy to focus on Him and seek out His face.  I've even started working on a study on gluttony in Scripture.  It steps on my toes, but it's interesting.  I'll post it when I get it done--it's not ready yet. :)

This week and in the past two or three, I've been reading different books on diet, exercise, and so on.  I've read "Chubster", "The Maker's Diet", "Leslie Sansone's Eat Smart Walk Strong", and Jillian Michaels' "Master Your Metabolism".  I've taken a little bit of each, the good, and thrown out the things that just don't fit into a homemaker on a budget's realm of possibilities.  There are many good ideas in these books.  "Chubster" seems the most common sense and down to earth, written by an everyday guy (definitely a secular book as well).  Leslie Sansone's book and dvd's are pretty motivating.  I didn't get much from "The Maker's Diet" and Jillian Michaels' books, as they pushed all organics/grass fed/no chemicals at all in anything/special washing ("Maker's Diet")/and foods that are just way out of our budget.  One thing I did walk away with, was to eat most of your foods that have a mom or came from a plant.  I can do that.  I'm working on a book now about breaking the sugar addiction.  I've already done that task, but am interested in reading what "experts" say to do.  It's a little out there, from what I'm reading.  I do admit, reading these books did change some ideas, reinforced others, and made me think more about what I eat and how I exercise.  And, they've not changed my beliefs on farming practices--I was raised on working farms, live in a rural farming area, and stand by farmers.  I like farmers and support them--I kinda like eating.

Basically my daily intake has evolved into more fresh fruits, mainly apples.  I bought 30 pounds of them today at 33 cents a pound.  I eat on average of 4 a day or more.  2 apples has the same calorie count as 1 cookie the kids love, so apples it is.  I've also kept raw carrots in the fridge, and we brought in the rest of the garden produce for the year.  I made a canner (yes, the huge waterbath type) full of veggie soup using fresh peppers, onion, celery, tomatoes, some frozen veggies, and potatoes in homemade bone broth, and once cooled stored it in small containers for the freezer that are easy to pull out and thaw, while keeping a few cups of it in the fridge.  This has been a main staple, and it's very filling and satisfying, and I know where my ingredients mostly come from.  This can be easily modified from serving to serving with lentils, beans, a little tomato sauce, rice, pasta, etc, for different flavors and textures.  I sip on herbal teas most of the day now, and started limiting coffee to 2 cups in the morning, dark roast or espresso.  I broke down and bought a can of Slim Fast powder to keep in the cabinet, for the days I don't feel hungry but really do need to eat something--especially breakfast--did you know Slim Fast powder tastes pretty good in coffee?  I don't really like using powders for meals, but I've noticed that if I keep drinking or light snacking, at least every 3 to 4 hours, I don't get voraciously hungry, I keep on an even keel with blood glucose, and I don't get stuffed either.  Some mornings things get so hectic I kinda forget to eat, so it's easier to put a little shake thing together and go on to the next meal as normal, than to skip it and let my body think "oh no she isn't going to feed me".  My meals are whole grains, fresh fruits, raw veggies or soups with lots of veggies, some meats like baked chicken or an occasional piece of ham, maybe a piece of from scratch bread every other day, lots of liquids.  Now this may change day to day, but who doesn't change?  I've also snacked on a few cookies this week, and let me tell you--they tasted AWESOME!  But, they weren't worth the calories...they were very tasty, but not worth the guilt afterward.

For the first time, I've been able to naturally get that "shut off" switch to work.  You know what I'm talking about--that signal you feel when your body says "that's enough".  Most of my life, I've not had that.  I would keep going until you'd think food was stacked up to the tonsils.  There was no "slow down, that's enough", it was straight to "now you done did it, evacuate evacuate!"  I finally feel like I have some control over when to stop, and actually feel the first warning signs of "enough".

Please please don't think this is all about self deprivation!  It's not!!  In these past weeks, this has been an adventure learning how to find a way of nourishing the body in a way that can be sustained and is also healthy.  This isn't a crash diet, lose 20 pounds in 2 days type thing.  I've done those through the years--the results were the 400 pounds I started with.  I can't live on a very restricted diet, it's not feasible and I'll just break it, so why not work with what's available and learn to be responsible with food?  I don't deprive myself of anything.  Since the side effects of the diabetes meds have worn off and basically nothing is off limits, the things I've loved for years, the high sugar, high fat, fried, sweet, etc, just don't appeal as much.  But there are once in a while times when a cookie looks good, and I'll have one.  I've had a couple candy bars.  A couple servings of Doritos.  If I keep with the package servings, I can keep control, am satisfied, and feel no desire to eat the whole bag of whatever.  Don't know if that makes sense, but it works. :)  There's no feeling that anything is off limits, so there's no constant desire...or obsessing...over a food.  I do make a mental note of the calories per serving and decide if it's really worth it or not.  Is that 150 calorie cookie worth it?  Once in a while, yes!  Most of the time, no.  I turned down a pecan pie from the store today after seeing a 600 calorie PER SERVING number---1/8th of the rather small pie was 600 calories!!!!  I could eat half that pie without a second thought, that's 2400 calories!  No way sister!  So back on the shelf it went.
