I Need Thee Every Hour

  1. I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
    No tender voice like Thine can peace afford.

    • Refrain:
      I need Thee, oh, I need Thee;
      Every hour I need Thee;
      Oh, bless me now, my Savior,
      I come to Thee.
    • I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;
      Temptations lose their pow’r when Thou art nigh.
    • I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
      Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.
    • I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will;
      And Thy rich promises in me fulfill.
    • I need Thee every hour, most Holy One;Oh, make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.

    We live in a world of self sufficiency.  We can do it all ourselves.  We don't need anyone.

    I'll admit it and raise my hand here--I've felt the same way at different points in my life, that I can do everything on my own with help of no one.

    This is a wrong attitude to have, especially among Christians.

    If we believe we can do all things on our own, we have no need of God.

    Humans really are needy people.  Sure, we have movements that are all about sustainability, doing for ourselves, etc.  But, this is nothing--we need God daily.  We cannot walk this world alone.

    Throughout the Bible, God shows just how needy we really are.  Better yet, He shows how He provides for us in our times of need.

    Matthew 6:8 says: "...for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."

    See--He knows your need, even if you don't want to admit it.  God even tells us to ask.  He knows we're needy people, He WANTS us to acknowledge that we need Him!  He provides for our needs--it is not us who provides for all our wants and needs, but the Lord!

    Matthew 7:7-"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (8) For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened."

    Luke 12:22-30--"And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?  And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

    Even Jesus had need while in His earthly life.  He ate--he needed food and water.  He needed a place to rest, even if temporary.  If Jesus had needs, what makes us think we can do all on our own?  Jesus sought the Father for His needs.  Are we not to do the same?

    The early church in Acts took care of needs of the flock.  God provided for the new believers through the generosity of those in the church.

    Acts 4:33-35 " And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.  Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need."

    Don't work to be so self sufficient that you don't need God.  We NEED God.  He doesn't need us.  He gives us breaht, sustanance, our basic needs, a few luxuries.  He promises to tend to our needs.,

    Philippians 4:19-- "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. "

    I am a needy woman.  I need God's guidance.  I need His wisdom.  I need His Word.  I need His grace and mercy.  I need His forgiveness and salvation.

    I can't make it in this world alone.

    Should my husband and children one day be gone without me, I will need God even more.

    The hymn says it best--"I need the every hour".

    I will never be totally self sufficient.  I am a needy woman, who has needs that God takes care of.

    I need thee every hour.
